Baby-care checklist: home and outings

A practical starting list for the spaces and supplies you use every day. Adapt it to your family; you do not need every baby gadget.

A place to rest

Set up a suitable cot or bassinet with a firm, flat mattress and fitted sheet.Keep pillows, loose blankets, bumpers and soft toys out of the sleep space.Show other caregivers the sleep space and agree on the care instructions.

Changing and care

Keep nappies, cleaning supplies and spare clothes within reach.Gather bath supplies before you start, and stay with your baby throughout.Keep a hand close and never leave your baby alone on a raised changing surface.Choose one place for appointment details and questions for your clinician.

Pack the feeding supplies you use, spare nappies, clothes and a bag for used items.Check opening hours, transport and baby-changing facilities at your destination.For car travel, check that the car seat suits your baby and is installed and used according to its instructions.
