Start with a safe place to sit

Choose a stable high chair that suits your child's size and the manufacturer's age and weight limits. If it folds, check that it locks securely. Compare the essentials before buying

• Chair: check the manual, restraint system, stability, cleaning instructions and storage dimensions. Measure your dining space before ordering.
• Bowl and spoon: look for items intended for infant feeding, with clear material and care information. Check whether the specific item is suitable for your dishwasher or microwave; do not assume that all silicone or bamboo products have the same limits.
• Suction base: treat suction as a convenience. Its grip can vary with the surface, moisture and use, so a bowl can still be lifted or tipped.
• Bib: choose a comfortable fit and an easy-to-clean design. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and remove it after the meal.
• Second-hand equipment: confirm the model and instructions, check for missing or damaged parts and check for recalls before use.

A safer meal matters more than the accessories

Keep baby upright and supervised throughout meals. Prepare food in a texture, shape and size suited to their development, and avoid small hard or sticky foods that are difficult to chew.
